What happened? 😦

I got laid off! 👎🏼 then decided not to go back to the classroom. It’s been a really tough journey through a year of un/underemployment, but now I’m hopefully going to start working at an ed tech company, or in higher ed, or another education adjacent field. It was a difficult decision (hence the lamenting post) but I do think it’s for the best. I’m still an educator, I’m just molting a bit.

Honestly the queue and schedule post options on Tumblr are extremely underrated. No other major social networking site has the ability to do that with the same ease as Tumblr does, and we’ve had them for like a decade now. They’re fantastic features and Tumblr doesn’t get enough credit for having them.

I’m actually willing to assert that Tumblr actually has some of the best site functionality:

- queue/schedule system

- tagging that doesn’t interfere with the actual content of posts

- the ask/inbox system

- ability to make likes/following lists private

- ability to reblog posts multiple times

- the “Keep Reading” feature

- ability to easily post different media. AFAIK Tumblr is the only social media site that lets you post audio without it being a video.

- dash is always in reverse chronological order

the ability to almost entirely customize your home page is pretty neat, too

I could go on about this forever but I firmly believe that Tumblr is a remnant from a time before companies figured out how to efficiently monetize social media, and as such it’s designed with users instead of advertisers in mind.

That’s both why it has continued to have active avid users in spite of a lot of technical /policy issues, and why it hasn’t been massively profitable.

I treasure this garbage site.

Noticed you've been posting more. How've you been!

This ask is a month old now but I think about it sometimes. Truthfully, anonymous stranger on the internet, I’m not doing well. I have a great support system, and I’m getting help, and I’m managing. Despite some really great things going on in my life, there’s a big gap where teaching was, and I’m struggling to fill it. That’s really the long and the short of it. I’ll be alright. I wish I didn’t have to go through this (again, in many senses), but I know (as always) I’ll come out better for it. That’s what I try to let my experience remind me of at least.

Say what you will about Tumblr but it’s rather punk that capitalism has no power here. That we cannot be turned into products and are free to roam the tundra and scream into the woods about whatever like some primal beings.

Tumblr is the only social media app on my phone for good reason. Every other post was sponsored, every micro and macro influencer selling something, every genuine, good-hearted small businessperson scrambling for interaction. It’s toxic as fuck and I hated it. Facebook’s a lost cause, I never made a Twitter, and tiktok got too addictive for me (I’d spend 5 hours just scrolling). Tumblr’s been my home for a decade. It’s so good to see nothing here has changed (even if that means seeing DONT SCROLL PAST THIS and SPREAD THIS LIKE WILDFIRE posts from 7 years ago). ♥️
